What does it mean to live inspired? Is it just one of those catchy phrases that people throw around or does this phrase "live inspired" have the potential to completely change your life?
Here are 5 tips on how to add inspiration to your daily life!
Step 1: Find Inspirational People
To me, living inspired means looking around and finding the people in your life that encourage and stir that drive in you to become better. I believe that you can be inspired by people you know directly and by people you may never actually meet in person, but are able to observe and learn from afar.
For example, I listen to a lot of podcasts and these men/women totally inspire me! They have a big impact on my life, but the probability of me actually meeting with them and having a coffee is pretty small (hey Rachel Hollis, let's grab a coffee!! 😉) BUT that doesn't mean they can't inspire me! I can choose to be intentional about listening to their podcasts and following them on social media to get my inspiration fix! Check out my favorite podcasts here.
Make A List
Now, grab a pen and paper and write down the names of those who inspire you. Whether you personally know them or not, write down their name and what inspires you about them.
- are you inspired by their lifestyle?
- their fashion sense?
- the job they have?
- how they interact with their husband or kids?
What makes that person stand out to you and makes you notice them?
Once you've written down what inspires you, write down what you think you could learn from them. Try and get specific with this!
- Can you learn better time management?
- Can you learn how to pair different fashion accessories?
- Can you learn how to stay organized and not lose your mind? (This type of person would definitely inspire me!)
Now that you have identified these people, intentionally include them in your life! Whether that's in person, through podcasts or social media, let them inspire you throughout your week. Remember what your mom always said, "you become who you hang around" and yep, it's true! The people you rub shoulders with, listen to, and follow on social media have a huge impact on your thinking and life! You have the choice to let them influence you in a positive way and inspire you or impact you negatively! The choice is really yours.
Step 2: Inspiration In Travel
Do you love to travel, like me? If I could, I would be continually traveling the world and experiencing different cultures and places. Travel inspires me in so many different ways! I love different locations and scenery. I love different cultures and traditions, and of course, the different types of food inspires me (unless it's super weird... then I'll just admire it from afar!)
Travel can be an amazing source of inspiration! If you enjoy traveling, try and incorporate more of it in your life. You may not be able to travel as frequently as you'd like or be able to visit the destinations you dream of because of finances, but find a way to make travel a priority in your life.
If your budget doesn't allow for overseas trips, why not find something that is within driving distance or even in your own state that's unique and cool to visit? Or maybe just camping at your local state park could bring you the inspiration and relaxation you need! Travel can look completely different for all of us and that's the beauty of it! I personally love the beach and waves, but for you, it may be the mountains and hiking trails that brings you peace and inspiration. Just find what fits you best and take a moment to write down your top five places that you could visit this year to stir inspiration.
Here are some of my favorite places I have visited. Some are within the U.S. and some are overseas. I hope they help inspire some great travel ideas!
Step 3: Inspirational Books
True confession time! Growing up, I hated reading. I would try everything I could to avoid reading during school and would always prefer watching the movie over reading the book!! Not until I was in high school/college and actually starting reading books I enjoyed (like time management, self improvement, etc... yes, I'm a complete over achiever!) I found value in reading.
I finally enjoyed it because I was inspired by the content! For me, I was inspired by discovering how people lived and what tools they used to better themselves. I was inspired by the lessons their life had taught them and how I could apply that to my life. I chose to read because I was inspired.
What type of books do you enjoy? Are you like me and like self-improvement and non-fiction books or do you love fictional books and great stories? Dust off your bookshelf or visit your local book store and see if there is a title that sticks out to you and is waiting to be read.
Pick five books you think will bring you inspiration and encouragement and commitment to reading them in a year. We are lucky to have so many resources instantly available to us! From Kindle books to audio books, there really is no excuse not to read! Find a topic or author that grabs your attention and dive in!!
I'm finding inspiration from these books below! Maybe there's one that might inspire you as well!
Step 4: Inspiration In Nature
This is probably the easiest place to find inspiration! God's creation is simply amazing! The world is not perfect and there are many places that don't look beautiful because of human destruction, but there are so many places where God's creation is showing off!!! There are the obvious places like the Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls, the beaches of Hawaii, but you don't have to travel to find inspiration in nature.
It could be right outside your front door! Go for a walk at your local state trail or around your neighborhood. Go sit by a lake or a river. Or maybe sit on your front porch and watch the sun go down. Inspiration can be found in the most simple places and often times those are the places we cherish the most! Don't over complicate it!
Step 5: Inspiration From Dreams/Goals
This is one of my top ways to be inspired because I'm a dreamer through and through! Nothing gets me more excited than talking about my dreams with my husband or writing down our plan of attack to make those dreams a reality. It ignites a fire within me!!!
But maybe you struggle with writing down your dreams because you're afraid of being judged or of someone telling you that they're silly or stupid dreams. Let me tell you this, I think the bigger and crazier the dream the better! I believe that when we dream big and impossible dreams, we are dreaming God-sized dreams! They are God-sized dreams because we need Him to help us accomplish them! God wants nothing more than for us to rely on Him and trust Him with our future!
Now, start dreaming and let's write them down!
Start with writing down your five top dreams, but write them down as if you have already accomplished them.
For example, "I am an exceptional wife" or "I am an author".
Write them down daily like they have already happened! This exercise retrains our brain to start believing that these dreams are possible and writing them out as though they have already happened will help rewrite what your brain thinks will happen.
Write down your 1, 3, 5 and 10 year goals.
Start by writing down your goals/dreams by yourself and then with your partner. Write down your personal goals, your professional goals, your family goals, etc. My husband and I had a blast spending our Anniversary weekend writing down our goals. Here are some free goal setting worksheets for you to use for this exercise and to help you stay organized. These goal worksheets work if you're using them for yourself or as a couple.
I always suggest starting with your 10-year goals first. I always start with the biggest goals because they usually requires a strategy to accomplish them. Write out the practical steps and assign them to the years where they need to happen. Keep going through all your goals and make sure you have a clear and practical approach to how you will accomplish them.
Now, hang these goals up so you can see them every day! Find a place where you'll see them and be reminded of what you're working towards. Don't write them down and tuck them away in a journal. Use these goal setting worksheets and put them up front and center!
It's A Journey....
Life is a journey and it's not all about the destination! I can easily get so overly focused on the dream, that I easily forget all the amazing things that happen on the way to accomplishing those goals. Enjoy the journey! Breath. Relax. Remember, God's timing isn't always our timing! I know, I know! I hate that too, but it's the truth!
Focus on living each day to the fullest and improving bit by bit, each day! Surround and fill your life with things that bring you inspiration! Don't get brought down by the negativity of the world and of social media! Don't get trapped in the comparison game! Find inspiration all around you and draw life from it! Live inspired!
