I find shopping for preschool age toys fun and intimidating all at once. Whether I’m shopping online or at Target, it amazing me just how many toys are out there! Like seriously?! Could there be any more options to choose from?!
When picking out toys for my girls (who are 4 and 1), I’m always conscious about if the toy holds any educational value. I’m not a teacher, nor do I have any educational training, therefore, I find it hard to know if what I’m purchasing is considered a “good” toy.
Now let me clarify, not every toy I purchase has an educational value to it, but I do like having some that I know are helping their fine motor, gross motor or communication skills.
Fun Preschool Toys
I love when my kids get new toys! With so many toys available, it’s hard to know what toys are good and I often am searching online and looking for recommendations.
My oldest daughter just turned four and is entering the world of pretend play! Everyday princess dresses are covering the floor of her room and I’m constantly having to introduce, to our imaginary friends, that Princess Anna has arrived!
And you know what? The mess drives me crazy, but I love it! I love watching her imagination run wild and watching her dream and pretend to be princesses.
Here are some of my favorite preschool age toys that are currently a hit in our house. These toys are for mainly three-year-olds and up, but I love watching our 15-month-old try and play along with her big sister.
Sometimes it’s not about the recommended age on the box, but instead letting their imaginations run wild and having fun!
This was one of Olivia’s Christmas presents and when she first opened it my first thought was, “oh man, that’s going to be messy!” Unlike regular sand, kinetic sand has some special power that binds the sand together, making it like wet sand, and drastically reduces the mess. My daughter loves this and I love it because it’s really not messy and she gets great developmental practice by using the various tools that come with it.
When I was a kid, my favorite thing to do was play store. So when my oldest started to enter the world of pretend play and playing store, I was ecstatic!
One day I was looking through the Target ad and saw this awesome Melissa & Doug pretend play store. Immediately, I knew this would not only be the perfect Christmas present, but this would be a great toy we could play together.
It’s the perfect toy to play together and it’s also a great toy for our 15-month-old to play with also. Oh, I almost forgot the best part! This store comes with a conveyer belt that moves, a scanner that beeps, a pullout money drawer and a credit card chip reader with etch-a-sketch! I’m seriously living my childhood dream right now!

We have entered the world of princess dress up and I LOVE IT! There is something so sweet about watching your daughter pretend to be a royal princess and dress up in pretty dresses! What’s great about kids is that their imagination is strong that they don’t need expensive dress up outfits to have fun! Olivia is constantly grabbing any dress or shirt out of her room and using it for dress up. It’s fun to see what she comes up with.
During our last couple of trips to Disney, we have let her pick out a princess dress as her treasure. If you get the chance to purchase a princess dress from a Disney theme park, I highly recommend it. There are more expensive than a typical dress up dress from Target, but the quality is amazing! And since we have two girls, I don’t mind spending a bit more since I know it will be used for a long time with our youngest daughter.
If you can’t make it to a Disney Park, here are some of our favorite on Amazon.
It amazes me how well my 4-year-old can use an iPad! It’s scary sometimes, but technology is something that will always be a part of her life, whether I like it or not. We try to limit the amount of screen time our kids get, but for her birthday, Olivia got ABC Mouse from her grandparents and it’s been a hit.
I don’t mind her playing her iPad for short periods of time if I know she is getting educational value from it. I love listening to her repeat the sounds of letters, put together puzzles, identify letters and so much more! I definitely feel this is helping her in preschool and giving her a headstart before Kindergarten.
I really love pretend play, maybe even more than my daughter does, and having a great play kitchen has added to the fun. There are so many different play kitchens available and after a lot of comparison shopping I picked out this KidKraft kitchen.
I didn’t want a plastic kitchen and I ended up finding this one on sale before Christmas and it’s been perfect for us! The quality is really good, the design is beautiful, and my girls love it! I can’t wait until the day they can use all of their pretend play skills and really make me something delicious in the kitchen!
Watching your little girls pretend to be a mommy melts my heart like crazy! Whether their rocking the baby, trying to change it’s diaper, or my favorite, trying to pretend to breastfeed it, it’s all so precious!
I like to find toys that are great in quality but are not too expensive that I have a heart attack if they break it. We were able to find this great baby doll and stroller from Pottery Barn and were able to get a great deal on it.
Most of the time Pottery Barn’s stuff isn’t on sale, but if you keep an eye out and check their clearance section, you may get lucky like we did and get a really good discount!
I love that my daughter is getting old enough to play games. Not only is it a great developmental skill for her, but it also gives me a little mental exercise, which I appreciate it!
This penguin matching game is a very simple, yet fun game to play. Because it’s a simple matching game, it didn’t take long for our 4-year-old to learn, and because she can play it so well, she loves playing it all the time.
Another thing I love about this game is the quality! The penguins are made out of wood and are really nice. This is also a great game to play with little siblings too! Just make sure those little pieces don’t wind up in a little one’s mouth!
It’s time to sing!! We love singing in our house and both my girls LOVE the microphone! I think they got that from me! This karaoke set is a lot of fun and easy to use. You can also download the app and they can sing along to some of their favorite nursery rhyme songs. The microphones also have different settings so they can have lots of fun sounding like a chipmunk or robot. It’s a lot of fun for all ages!
Fun for all!
The great part about kids is that you don’t need fancy toys! The most important part is just to let kids be kids and let their imagination run loose! But if you are looking for some fun new toys to help your kids grow, I hope you enjoyed these recommendations. We love them in our house and hope you will too!
