You're packing your bags and getting ready to embark on your Hawaiian vacation and chances are, a Hawaiian luau is on your list of things to do! On our recent trip to Oahu, my family and I attended what I would consider to be Oahu's best family luau. (Make sure to check out our highlight video at the end of the post!)
I have been to several luaus throughout our different Hawaiian vacations and as a mom of two little girls, I can confidently say the Disney Aulani's luau is the best family luau on Oahu!
Luaus are a fantastic way to experience the beautiful and fascinating Hawaiian culture and to get that true Aloha feeling. But with so many luaus available, how do you pick the best one? And if you are vacationing as a family, how do ensure your kids will really enjoy a luau?
Oahu's Best Family Luau
When deciding what luau would be best for our family vacation, my biggest concern was that the luau was kid-friendly, especially for young kids. When searching for the perfect luau, I came across Aulani's luau and right off the bat I was sold because it was Disney.
I had never been to Disney's Aulani resort, but I have been to Disney World countless times and a few Disney cruises. From experience, I know firsthand - Disney doesn't disappoint. I have never had a bad Disney experience and I knew that the quality and experience would be perfect for our family.
Like most Disney experiences, the luau was a perfect combination of kid-friendly activities and adult entertainment. Before the luau begins, kids can enjoy a variety of Hawaiian activities that are all included in your ticket price.
Our three-year-old daughter loved making a fresh lei bracelet, pounding poi and getting a fake tattoo. They also were teaching kids Hawaiian songs and the ukulele. It was a wonderful and relaxing way to start off the evening!
Meet & Greet with Moana
Once our daughter heard we were going to Disney for a luau the first thing she mentioned was Moana! The moment we walked into the resort she was on the lookout for her! I had read on another blog that Moana was a part of the show, but I had no idea if we'd actually get to meet her.
Luckily for our daughter, as soon as we started walking on the path to the luau, there she was! I'm not sure how long Moana is available for a meet and greet, but we didn't arrive at the resort extremely early and Moana was still there. Plus, there wasn't even a line to see her. Let's face it, that never happens!
Our daughter was beside herself that she met Moana and we were so thankful we didn't have to hear her begging to see her the whole night. If you want to meet Moana before the luau, get there before they start seating people, and keep an eye out for her while you walk to the great lawn. Hopefully, she'll be there waiting for you like she was for us! It's the perfect way to start the night!
Family Friendly Activities
When planning a family vacation, it's always important to find activities that both the kids and adults enjoy. My biggest fear of attending the Disney Aulani luau was that it would be to kid-focused. It wouldn't of matter to me personally, but the rest of my extended family was with us and I think they would have been disappointed if it was all about Mickey and Minnie.
As the luau began, Disney did a great job of entertaining the kids from the beginning. Moana was a part of the beginning of the show, which instantly got the kids attention and later on, Mickey and Minnie came out and taught the kids the hula. Talk about a picture perfect moment and my daughter still talks about that moment months later.
A luau kids and adults will love
The rest of the evening was a combination of great food, especially the Moana cupcakes for the kids, and a beautifully crafted luau story. Besides the beginning of the show, the rest of the night was adult focused. The dancers, singers, and storyline were very well crafted in true Disney fashion.
Picking which luau to attend can be difficult with so many choices. But if you are traveling as a family, especially with kids under 10, I highly suggest the luau at Disney's Aulani. The best part is, you don't have to be staying at the resort to attend! We stayed at the Hilton Grand Village on Waikiki and drove out for the night. You can purchase the tickets directly online and you're all set.
Luaus can range in price based on location and what is all included. When I did a price comparison between Hilton's luau and Disney's luau, Disney's was only a bit more expensive. But when you add in the additional kid activities, characters, and a smaller venue, it's worth the extra price. In the end, it was a magical night filled with extra memories we will cherish for a lifetime!
A night your family won't forget
A Hawaiian vacation isn't complete without attending a luau and if you're looking for one the whole family will enjoy, this is it! Out of everything we did on our vacation, meeting Moana and the luau is the one thing our daughter continues to talk about, even months later.
If you love Disney and have young children, this luau is definitely worth the drive and I believe is the best family luau on Oahu! Combine a beautiful resort, kids friendly activities, great food, and an entertaining luau, it's the perfect night for all ages. Just don't forget your camera! These are memories you'll want to remember for a lifetime!
